ISTANBUL, Turkey – Nick Marable (Columbia, Mo./Sunkist Kids/MWF) defeated 2012 Olympic champion and two-time World champion Jordan Burroughs (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids/Nebraska RTC) in a quarterfinals match at 74 kg/163 lbs. at the Yasar Dogu International on Saturday.
Burroughs led 1-0 after one period, but Marable scored two takedowns in the second period. A Burroughs pushout and late takedown tied the match at 4-4, but Marable won the criteria decision.
The Marable victory snaps Burroughs win streak at 69 matches. Burroughs had won two bouts to reach the quarterfinals in Istanbul. It was Burroughs first loss in freestyle wrestling on the Senior level.
This is the first competition for Jordan Burroughs since the 2013 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, where he won his third straight World or Olympic title in an amazing performance. Burroughs competed less than a month after breaking his ankle in training prior to the Worlds.
Marable defeated Batuhan Demircin of Turkey in the semifinals, 6-3, to reach the finals, where he will face M. Rezae Ghaleh of Iran.
Marable comes off a victory at the Grand Prix of Paris earlier this month.
