HAVANA, Cuba – Kyle Dake (Ithaca, N.Y./Titan Mercury WC/Finger Lakes WC) won a gold medal at 74 kg/163 lbs. at the Cerro Pelado International on Friday.

Dake went 3-0 for the day, outscoring his opponents 26-2. He opened with technical falls over a pair of Canadians, Ryan Lue, 12-2 and Cleo Ncube, 10-0. In the finals, he stopped Reinier Perez of Cuba, 4-0.

Dake is currently No. 2 in the USA, placing second at the 2013 World Team Trials behind Olympic and World champion Jordan Burroughs. He made history as the first wrestler to win four NCAA Div. I titles at four different weight classes during his incredible college career at Cornell.

The United States won two bronze medals at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. from Brandon Precin (Evanston, Ill./New York AC) and Steve Mytych (Coplay, Pa./Lehigh Valley AC). Both had 3-1 records for the day.

Precin defeated Zoheir Elouamque of France, 12-2 in his bronze medal bout. Mytych pinned Brandon Escobar of Honduras in 1:15 to win his bronze medal.

The third U.S. bronze medalist was 2013 U.S. Open champion Kellen Russell (Ann Arbor, Mich./New York AC/Cliff Keen WC) at 65 kg/143 lbs. Russell had an impressive 4-1 record on the way to his medal. He stopped American Drew Headlee, 11-1 in his bronze medal bout.

Team USA had two athletes place fifth after falling in the bronze-medal round: Drew Headlee (Bethlehem, Pa./Lehigh Valley AC) and Montell Marion (Des Moines, Iowa/TWC) at 65 kg/143 lbs.

"We had a good first day of wrestling at the Cerro Pellado with a champion and three bronze medals. We always have areas to continue improving. However, it’s nice to see progress in technical areas we’ve trained and the competitive results to back it up. We are looking forward to a great day tomorrow to close it out and head into our Cuba training camp. This tournament and training opportunity is a big difference maker for both our Senior level athletes and now our Juniors as well,” said National Freestyle Developmental Coach Bill Zadick.
