Olivas, Fix earn silver medals in men’s freestyle on last day of Youth Olympic Games

The United States capped off the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China with two silver medal performances in men’s freestyle from Cade Olivas and Daton Fix.


Both Olivas and Fix posted 3-1 records on the final day of competition in Nanjing, dominating their respective pools before dropping close decisions in their gold medal matches.


“The boys all wrestled really well,” said U.S. Youth Olympic Games coach Sara Bahoura. “Their energy was great and their pace was high. They made adjustments from first to second period to create more openings and scoring opportunities.”


Olivas opened the day with a convincing 11-0 technical fall over Cabbar Duyum of Turkey. Duyum was the 11th place finisher at the FILA Cadet World Championships in Snina, Slovakia in July. Olivas would continue to impress in pool play, earning technical falls over Miguel Angel Gurdian Lopez of Nicaragua, 12-1, and Mohamed Hegab of Egypt, 10-0.


These three victories for Olivas would set up a classic U.S. versus Russia battle for the gold medal at 46 kg. Olivas lost a tight 1-3 decision to Russian Ismail Gadzhiev to secure one of three silver medals for the U.S. in Nanjing.


Fix impressed as well throughout the Youth Olympic Games competition as he cruised to pool round victories over Elmedin Sejfulau of Macedonia, 10-0, Reynhardt Louw of South Africa, 6-1 and Ebrahim Abdullah Ali Al-Shebami of Yemen 14-4.


In the gold medal bout Fix would face a dangerous opponent from Kazakhstan, Mukhambet Kuatbek. It was a back and forth affair, but Fix would come up one point shy to Kuatbek, dropping the match 6-7.


Olivas and Fix join teammate Mason Manville as silver medalists for the U.S. in Nanjing. Manville won silver at 69 kg in the Greco-Roman competition earlier in the week.


“I am proud of how all three prepared for this competition and wrestled straight for the medal stand,” Bahoura said.
