ZAGREB, Croatia – A pair of U.S. women have earned spots in bronze-medal matches on the first day of women’s freestyle action at the FILA Junior World Championships on Thursday.
Competing for bronze medals will be Marina Doi (Kingsburg, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 44 kg/97 lbs. and Kayla Miracle (Campbellsville, Ky./Sunkist Kids) at 59 kg/130 lbs.
Doi, a three-time FILA Cadet World medalist, will have a chance at her first FILA Junior World medal, when she faces Weronika Sikora of Poland in the bronze-medal round.
Doi opened with a loss, falling to Haruka Uchijo of Japan by technical fall, 0-11 in 5:25. Doi only trailed 0-1 after the first period, but the Japanese wrestler opened up her offense in the second frame.
When Uchijo advanced to the finals, Doi was pulled back into the repechage, where she edged Mariya Georgiyeva of Ukraine, 6-6. Doi won the criteria by scoring last, a clutch takedown late in the match.
Miracle, a FILA Cadet World silver medalist in the past, started on a roll, scoring a pair of pins over Bayhan Derya of Turkey in 1:46 and Madina Bagbergenova of Kazakhstan in 2:14. In the quarterfinals, Miracle lost a close 3-4 bout to Luisa Niemesch of Germany, 3-4.
Niemesch reached the finals, bringing Miracle back into repechage, where she pinned Patrizia Liuzzi of Italy in 5:44. Miracle trailed much of the bout, but came from behind to take a two-point lead late in the second period. Miracle hit a double leg takedown, breaking Liuzzi and securing the fall with just 16 seconds on the clock.
Both of these athletes will enter college when they return from the FILA Junior Worlds, Doi at King University and Miracle at Campbellsville University.
Two other U.S. athletes were defeated in their first match and were unable to compete in the repechage when their opponents failed to reach the finals.
At 51 kg/112.25 lbs., Jamestown University star Amy Fearnside (Morgan Hill, Calif./Titan Mercury WC/Jamestown) dropped an active battle with talented Lilya Horishna of Ukraine, 5-8. Horishna reached the semifinals, but was defeated, which eliminated Fearnside from the competition.
Dropping a heartbreaker in her first match was Oklahoma City University star Kayla Aggio (Rohnert Park, Calif./OKCU Gator RTC) at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. Aggio was in a 3-3 tie with Martina Kueuz of Austria late in the bout, and held the tiebreaking criteria. However, Kueuz scored a one-point pushout with seven seconds on the clock to win the bout, 4-3. Aggio was not able to compete again when Kueuz fell short of the finals.
