First four U.S. women wrestlers weigh in and get draws at Junior Worlds in Croatia

The first four U.S. women freestyle wrestlers have weighed in and received their first round draws for the FILA Junior World Championships on Thursday.FILA Junior athletes are 17-20 years old.
Jamestown University star Amy Fearnside (Morgan Hill, Calif./Titan Mercury WC/Jamestown) will face two-time Junior World bronze medalist Lilya Horishna of Ukraine at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. Fearnside won a silver medal at the 2014 University World Championships
“Amy never stops. She is in great shape and she wrestles to the last whistle. That is going to serve her well here,” said U.S. coach Jenna Pavlik.
Two of the women wrestling on Thursday are past Cadet World medalists.
Marina Doi (Kingsburg, Calif./Titan Mercury WC), who is competing at 44 kg/97 lbs., drew Haruka Uchijo of Japan in her opening match. Doi boasts three FILA Cadet World medals, a gold in 2012, a silver in 2011 and a bronze in 2013. Doi will attend King University in the fall.
Also competing is 2012 FILA Cadet World silver medalist is Kayla Miracle (Campbellsville, Ky./Sunkist Kids) at 59 kg/130 lbs. Her first opponent is Bayhan Derya of Turkey. Miracle will attend Campbellsville University.
“(Doi and Miracle) are ready. They have tons of World experience. They won’t be shell-shocked. They know what to expect on the big stage,” said Pavlik.
Another college star, Kayla Aggio (Rohnert Park, Calif. (OKCU Gator RTC), opens at 67 kg/147.5 lbs. against 2011 Cadet World bronze medalist Martina Kueuz of Austria. Aggio stars at Oklahoma City University.
“She has a great shot. She’s a brawler and wrestles hard every match. And she’s starting to believe in herself, which is huge at this level,” said Pavlik.
In 2013, the United States placed seventh in the FILA Junior Worlds in women’s freestyle, led by two medalists.
“The girls are working hard, are in good physical spirits and in good physical shape. This is a motivated group. They set a goal of coming in here and winning the tournament. We are doing everything we can do to support that. We have a lot of talent and experience, which is a dangerous combination,” said Pavlik.
