ZAGREB, Croatia - The four U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers competing at the FILA Junior World Championships on Tuesday dropped preliminary matches and were eliminated from medal contention in their weight classes.

Finishing with a 1-1 record was Jon Jay Chavez (Boise, Idaho/Suples WC/BWC/CYC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. Chavez, a 2013 FILA Cadet World bronze medalist, was the only American to win a bout in the opening session.

Chavez opened up with a nice 7-2 win over 2011 European Cadet champion David Klimek of Poland. The first period was scoreless, with Chavez having a caution. In the second, Klimek scored the first point on a stepout. Chavez countered a Klimek attempt for a two-point takedown, which was protested by the Polish athlete and denied. With a 3-1 lead, Chavez was cautioned again, making it 3-2. Late in the period, with Klimek pressing, Chavez got another takedown and a turn for the 7-2 win.

Chavez lost in the second round to Vlad Mariea of Romania, 0-3, unable to get his offense untracked. He was knocked out of the draw when Mariea failed to reach the finals.

Eliminated after losing his first match at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. was Kevin Beazley (Howell, Mich./Virginia Beach RTC), who was competing in his second straight FILA Junior World Championships.

In his opening bout against Nokhcho Labazanov of Russia, Beazley scored first on a headlock for two points. Labazanov got the reversal, then scored four straight points with a lift and a gutwrench to take a 5-2 lead. From that point on, Labazanov countered Beazley’s throw attempts, opening the scoring in the second period for the 12-3 technical fall. Beazley was not able to enter repechage when Labazanov lost in the second round.

Also knocked out after one bout at 50 kg/110 lbs. was Josiah Seaton (Bonner Springs, Kansas/Trojan WC). Seaton fell behind early to Artur Petrosyan of Russia, and was unable to stop Petrosyan’s attacks, dropping an 0-8 technical fall in the first period. Seaton was not eligible for repechage after Petrosyan lost in the next round.

Falling at 60 kg/132 lbs. in round one was Dante Rodriguez (Kearney, Neb./Cyclone WC). Rodriguez, an Iowa State recruit, fell in his opener to Sergei Emelin of Russia by technical fall, 0-8, in 1:07. Emelin secured a front headlock and rolled Rodriguez four times, with each move scoring two points, to secure the victory. Emelin won his next match but was beaten in the quarterfinals by 2013 Junior World champion Karen Aslayan of Armenia, eliminating Rodriguez from the tournament.

“I felt like they wrestled hard, but they didn’t get the job done. There are no excuses. I don’t like to lose and I know they don’t like to lose. We drew three Russians but we have to be better than them. We can’t be cheerleaders after the fact and hope they make it to the finals. We have to take care of business on the mat,” said U.S. coach Rob Hermann.

The first night of finals featured three individual champions for Azerbaijan, Ibrahim Nurullayev (50 kg), Elman Mukhtarov (60 kg) and Orkhan Nuruyev (96 kg). Also claiming a gold medal was Turkey’s Furkan Bayrak (74 kg)

Four other U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers weighed in and got their draws later in the day. Click here for day two draw article.
