ZAGREB, Croatia - The final four U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers have weighed in and received their draws for the FILA Junior World Championships on Wednesday, August 6.
At heavyweight, 2011 Cadet World freestyle champion Adam Coon (Fowlerville, Mich./Cliff Keen WC) will compete in Greco-Roman, and will face Stepan David of the Czech Republic in his opening match.
Coon will compete in both Greco-Roman and freestyle for Team USA at the Junior Worlds this year. Coon, a star for the University of Michigan, also wrestled both styles at the 2011 Cadet World Championships.
“Adam Coon, as big as he is, and having beat the Junior World bronze medalist (Sam Stoll) just to make the team, I feel he has confidence coming in,” said U.S. coach Rob Hermann.
The U.S. Olympic Training Site at Northern Michigan has two athletes on the team who wrestle on Wednesday, Arthur Carmona (Brawley, Calif./USOTS) at 55 kg/121 lbs. and Alejandro Sancho (Miami, Fla./USOTS) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.
Carmona will face Ion Lefter of Moldova, who was fifth in 2012 FILA Cadet World Championships. Sancho has drawn Stefan Steigl of Austria, who was fourth in the 2013 Austrian Senior Open.
“These two wrestlers are from the USOTS program and wrestle Greco-Roman full time. They have been overseas three or four times over the last two years. Their experience from overseas will hopefully help them to do well here,” said Hermann.
Also competing for Team USA is Richard Carlson (Mounds View, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 84 kg/185 lbs, a wrestler for UW-LaCrosse. Carlson will battle Lasha Gobadze of Georgia, a 2011 FILA Cadet World bronze medalist.
“Rich Carlson was at our training camp. He’s also been training with Dan Chandler’s group, the Minnesota Storm, with the best guys down there in Minneapolis. We have some foreign experience competing on the second day,” said Hermann.
