Boise State moves into USA Today/NWCA/AWN Coaches Poll for first time this season
by Jason Bryant NWCA
Boise State’s upset of Oregon State over the weekend has helped move the Broncos into the USA Today/NWCA/AWN Division I Coaches Poll for the first time this season. Sparked by Chris Castillo’s win over Scott Sakaguchi at 149 pounds, the Broncos debuted at No. 25, while Oregon State dropped to No. 18, tied with Stanford.
Stanford moved up five spots after picking up two wins over the weekend against ranked teams, but also losing to unranked Eastern Michigan. Wins over No. 19 Michigan and No. 25 Central Michigan were enough to move the Cardinal up.
Nothing changed amongst the top seven teams, as Penn State, Minnesota, Oklahoma State, Iowa, Oklahoma, Cornell and Illinois held steady. Ohio State moved up a spot to No. 8, while Missouri slid up to No. 9 and Nebraska up a spot to No. 10.
Penn State rolled past Lock Haven 34-6, while Minnesota won 18 of 20 bouts of the weekend in wins over Purdue and Wyoming.
Ohio State beat Duke, Davidson and George Mason, giving head coach Tom Ryan his 200th victory as a collegiate head coach.
Nebraska moved to 2-0 after a 36-6 win at South Dakota State.
A shuffle in the top 10 was a result of then-No. 15 Virginia upsetting No. 8 Virginia Tech 19-16 on Sunday. The Cavaliers (6-1) jumped up to No. 11, one spot above the Hokies, who dropped to No. 12.
Iowa State moved into the Top 15 for the first time this season. The Cyclones improved to 5-0 with a road win at Old Dominion. Michigan dropped three spots to No. 22 after losing to Stanford.
