Holm, Feroleto named Outstanding Wrestlers on day one of Minnesota Storm Holiday Cup

ROCHESTER, Minn. - The Minnesota Storm Holiday Cup featured Greco-Roman and women’s freestyle on its first day of competition on Friday.
2013 U.S. World Team member Jordan Holm (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) won a five-athlete roundrobin at 84 kg/185 lbs. with a 4-0 record. Included in his victories was a 3-1 decision over 2012 Olympian Ben Provisor (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 84 kg/185 lbs. Holm won this event for the second straight year, and was named Outstanding Wrestler in Greco-Roman this year.
Joining Holm as repeat champions from last year were Kendrick Sanders (Homestead, Fla./New York AC/USOEC) at 74 kg/185 lbs. and John Wechter (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
Sanders scored an 8-0 technical fall over Geordan Speiller (Oviedo, Fla./Florida Jets) in the final. Wechter also had an 8-0 technical fall finals win, stopping Josef Rau (Chicago, Ill./Minnesota Storm) for the gold.
In Greco-Roman, 2012 Freestyle Olympian Sam Hazewinkel (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) captured the 55 kg/121 lbs. title, with a 2-0 finals win over Isaiah Varona (Homestead, Fla./USOEC). Hazewinkel, who was an Olympic Trials runner-up in Greco-Roman earlier in his career, returned to compete in Greco-Roman for the first time in more than five years.
Two-time Olympian Spenser Mango (Colorado Springs, Colo./Army WCAP) moved up a weight class to win at 60 kg/132 lbs., scoring a 9-0 technical fall over Sammy Jones (USOEC) in the final.
Other individual Greco-Roman champions were Bryce Saddoris (Camp LeJeune, N.C./U.S. Marines) at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and David Arendt (Camp LeJeune, N.C./U.S. Marines) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
Claiming the Outstanding Wrestler award in women’s freestyle was Othella Feroleto (Colorado Springs, Colo./Army WCAP) at 59 kg/130 lbs. Feroleto won a three-athlete roundrobin, beating 2012 Olympian Kelsey Campbell of the Sunkist Kids, 5-4, then defeated 2012 U.S. Open runner-up Melissa Apodaca of the U.S. Marines by pin.
2013 U.S. World Team member Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Sunkist Kids) won the 48 kg/105.5 lbs. title, sweeping a best-of-three series over Paulina Biega (Marshall, Mo./Missouri Valley WC) with a pin and a technical fall.
Katherine Fulp-Allen (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Jacarra Winchester (San Leandro, Calif. Missouri Valley WC) defeated past U.S. World Team members in best-of-three series for their titles.
Fulp-Allen stopped two-time World Team member Jessica Medina (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) in two straight bouts at 51 kg/112 lbs., 2-1 and by pin at 4:57.
Winchester stopped 2011 U.S. World Team member Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army) in two straight, 8-4 and 15-6.
Three individual champions won their weight classes uncontested.
The men’s freestyle and women’s Greco-Roman events will be completed on Saturday.
