ROCHESTER, Minn. – There will be some exciting new additions to the second annual Minnesota Storm Holiday Cup, set for the RCTC Regional Sports Center Performance Court in Rochester, Minn., Dec. 19-21.

Prize money will be provided for medalists this year by the local organizing committee. In addition to competition in the three Olympic styles of wrestling, a new women’s Greco-Roman division will also be added this year.

The event is hosted by the Minnesota Storm, one of the top wrestling clubs in the nation, as part of its commitment to building international wrestling.

“We are expecting a larger turnout this year. We have prize money for the first time. Last year, we gave some nicknacks. This year, we have prize money for the medalists and the Outstanding Wrestlers. The feedback has been great,” said Dan Chandler of the Minnesota Storm.

The top three finishers in each men's Greco-Roman, men's freestyle, and women's freestyle weight class will win prize money, with champions receiving $1,000, runners-up receiving $250 and third-place finishers receiving $100. Athletes must be U.S. citizens to receive prize money. U.S. athletes must place in the top four of their weight class to qualify for prize money.

The Outstanding Wrestler in each of these three divisions will also receive $1,000.

The total amount of prize money available in the Olympic styles at the Minnesota Storm Holiday Cup is $31,350.

The women’s Greco-Roman division is a new program this year, which has been well received by many women wrestlers. Although women do not compete in Greco-Roman on the international level, many have expressed an interest in competing in the style.

In women's Greco-Roman, there will be a sliding scale to determine prize money. The Outstanding Wrestler will receive $1,000 if 20 women compete in the Women's Greco tournament. The Outstanding Wrestler will receive $750 if 14 women compete in the Women's Greco tournament. The Outstanding Wrestler will receive $500 if 8 women compete in the Women's Greco tournament.

“The women love it. They are excited about it and want to try it. When they started women’s wrestling in the 1970’s in Scandinavia, it was Greco for the women. I was a bit surprised when at the first World Championships with women that the women went freestyle. Women’s Greco-Roman is fun to watch. We are getting good response about this,” said Chandler.

Athletes who wish to compete can still register online through Wednesday, December 18 at 5:00 p.m. Central time. Entry fee for participants registering online is $40 per athlete, with no refunds for failure to compete.

There will also be onsite registration available for athletes who did not sign up online.

Once again this year, the Minnesota Storm Cup will be held alongside one of the nation’s most respected high school wrestling holiday tournaments, the 27th annual Minnesota Christmas Tournament, sponsored by Jennie-O Turkey Store. There will be 34 top teams in the tournament, featuring strong Minnesota programs plus additional teams from Wisconsin and North Dakota.

The Minnesota Storm Holiday Cup, along with the finals of the Minnesota Christmas Tournament will be webcast on TheMat.com and its video portal, TheMat.tv. Chris Moen will handle the commentary.

Fans can purchase General Admission tickets for $8.00 per day.
