MOLODECHNO, Belarus - Belarus edged the United States, 32-31, in a combined men and women's freestyle dual meet in Belarus today.
A total of 17 matches were held in the match, with the United States winning nine of them. Belarus scored three pins during the dual meet, to allow for the margin of victory.
The event was held before a large and appreciative crowd.
"It was well done," said USA Wrestling National Freestyle Developmental Coach Dave Bennett. "They are real excited we are here. It was a good dual meet and a good cultural experience. We have been treated well. I expect we will do very well in the tournament this weekend. This was a great way to warm our wrestlers up. Wrestling our first match of the tour in this dual meet will help us."
The U.S. won six of the seven women's bouts. Included were victories by two-time World champion Kristie Marano (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), 2004 Olympic bronze medalist Patricia Miranda (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) and two-time World bronze medalist Sally Roberts (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC).
