Bruce Baumgartner to attend NJ Night of Champions, October 20 in Short Hills, N.J.

Bruce Baumgartner, the most decorated wrestler in New Jersey wrestling history, will attend the 2007 NJ Night of Champions Gala on October 20th at the Hilton Short Hills in Short Hills, N.J.

Baumgartner, who is originally from Haledon, N.J., will be among the numerous wrestling legends who have confirmed participation in this event.

Baumgartner dominated international freestyle wrestling for almost two decades, competing at super heavyweight. He won two Olympic gold medals, three World gold medals and a record 13 World and Olympic medals during his record-setting wrestling career.

The NJ Night of Champions is a celebration of the Olympic relationship between the USA and China. Those who attend will witness the presentation of a USA Wrestling Lifetime Achievement Award to wrestling icon Bill Farrell. In addition, one of China's greatest athletic stars in history will attend.

Many members of the 1972 and 1984 U.S. Olympic Wrestling Teams are expected to attend this spectacular event. Baumgartner won his first Olympic gold medal at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, Calif.

Baumgartner was a student at Manchester Regional High School in New Jersey, and placed third in the 1978 New Jersey high school state tournament, and won a Junior National title competing for Team New Jersey. He went on to win a NCAA Div. I title for Indiana State Univ. His greatest achievements came on the Olympic level.

Baumgartner won Olympic gold medals in 1984 and 1992, an Olympic silver medal in 1988 and an Olympic bronze medal in 1996. He was the U.S. flagbearer in the Opening Ceremonies of the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Ga.

He won World gold medals in 1986, 1993 and 1995, with a total of nine World Championship medals during his career. Baumgartner won gold medals at all the major international tournaments, including the World Cup, the Pan American Games, the Goodwill Games, the World Grand Championships and the World University Championships.

Baumgartner currently serves as the Athletic Director for Edinboro University in Pennsylvania. He had a long career as a Div. I wrestling coach for Edinboro before taking over his current position. He also served four years as the president of USA Wrestling.'

Baumgartner was inducted as a Distinguished Member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2002.

Baumgartner is among 16 Distinguished Members of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame who have confirmed participation at this historic evening. The others include:

This amazing group of 16 Hall of Fame members won a combined eight Olympic gold medals, nine World gold medals, 12 Olympic medals and 20 World medals. Also, Farrell, Weick, Rice, Gable, Peckham and Fraser were outstanding international wrestling coaches, and Zuaro was one of the world's top Olympic referees.

At the event, Olympians from China and America will join together in the celebration of the 1984 Games and appreciation and anticipation for the 2008 Olympic to be staged in less than one year in Beijing China!

Attending from China will be "Jenny" Lang Ping a member of the 1984 Chinese Olympic Gold Medal Team and one of the most famous and respected individuals in the history of volleyball. Her nickname is "Iron Hammer" and she is considered by many a "national hero" in China.
