NEW YORK, N.Y. - Winning the five final matches of the dual meet, No. 8 Cornell defeated No. 10 Rutgers, 28-10 in the featured dual meet at the fifth-annual Grapple at the Garden in world-famous Madison Square Garden.

In a battle of former EIWA foes, the Big Red won the matches they were supposed to win, and a few that were up for grabs, ending up winning seven of the 10 wins in the dual meet over the Big Ten Scarlet Knights.

Cornell struck first with two straight wins. Noah Baughman got it started when he broke a 1-1 tie with 25 seconds left in the third period for a 3-1 victory at 125 pounds.

In a battle of a pair of ranked wrestlers at 133, No. 17 Mark Grey of Cornell jumped to a 4-1 lead on No. 14 Tyson Dippery of Rutgers with a takedown and a tilt, followed by a Dippery escape. Dippery rode Grey out the second period.

In the third period, Grey received a point when Dippery was penalized for an illegal move. A Dippery takedown tightened it to 5-3, and he clinched riding time but was unable to turn Grey. A Grey escape brought them onto their feet where the match ended in favor of Grey, 6-4.

“We got beat at 125 at 133, and I’m not blaming those guys, but that was the biggest part of the match right there,” said Rutgers head coach Scott Goodale. “Trying to play catchup against one of the best teams in the country is a really, really hard thing to do.”

Rutgers All-American Anthony Ashnault gave up the first takedown to Cornell’s Will Koll, but he scored takedowns on his own in the first and third period to give the Scarlet Knights’ its first win by a 6-4 margin at 141 pounds.

Dominating from the top position, Ken Theobold of Rutgers defeated Joey Galasso of Cornell, 6-0 at 149 pounds. There was no takedown in the first period, but Theobold rode out Galasso for the entire second and third periods. He scored a four-point turn late in the second period, added a stalling point, and received the riding time point for a clear victory.

Rutgers scored the first bonus point of the dual, when John Van Brill earned am 8-0 major decision over Taylor Simaz of Cornell. Van Brill scored takedowns in the first and second period, earned a key tilt for two points on the edge in the second period, and added the final point on riding time. Rutgers led 10-6 halfway through the dual.

It was then that Cornell’s upper weights dropped the hammer on Scarlet Knights.

Cornell grabbed the lead at 157 pounds, when Brandon Womack locked up a cradle and pinned Willie Scott in the second period in 4:24, putting the Big Red ahead 12-10.

At NCAA runner-up Brian Realbuto of Cornell had some difficulty with Phil Bakuckas of Rutgers, giving up a third-period takedown for a 2-2 score at 174 points. However, with a slick counter shot, Realbuto took down Bakuckas with eight seconds on the clock for a clutch 4-3 win.

In another battle of ranked stars at 184 pounds, two-time NCAA champion and No. 1 ranked Gabe Dean of Cornell scored a major decision over No. 13 Nick Gravina of Rutgers, 17-3. The match was tied at 3-3 early in the third period when Dean poured it on, getting a takedown, then turning Gravina three times for backpoints. Add in the riding time point, and Dean scored 14 straight third-period points.

The battle at 197 pounds went to Cornell’s Ben Honis, who scored all of his points in the third period in a 4-0 win over Anthony Messner. After there were no takedowns in the first period, Honis rode Messner out in the second period. Honis escaped and took down Messner in the third-period and added a riding time point.

Heavyweight Jeremy Sweany closed out the Big Red’s big day win a second-period pin over Razohnn Gross of Rutgers. With no first period scores, Sweany escaped then received a point when Gross was penalized for stalling. Sweany scored a spin-behind takedown for a 4-0 lead, then turned Gross and secured the fall at 4:32.

Earlier in the day, Cornell shut out Hofstra, 39-0, and heads into December with a 3-0 record.Rutgers also had a 39-3 victory over Columbia earlier in the day, and leaves New York City with a 5-1 record.

What makes the Grapple at the Garden such a fun event is the variety of action over three sessions. Included were college wrestling bouts, high school action and some youth wrestling competition.

Cornell was not the only team to come out of the Garden with two victories. Among the Div. I teams, Princeton also won twice, stopping Buffalo 28-12 and Maryland 24-9.

Pitt-Johnstown, ranked No. 3 in Div. II, won a pair of bouts, stopping local team LIU Post 36-6 and shutting out Johns Hopkins, 55-0. Two ranked Div. III teams also claimed two wins, No. 11 Stevens Institute of Technology and No. 16 New York University. Stevens Tech beat No. 17 Wilkes, 25-17, then stopped Oswego State 30-9. NYU had wins over Muhlenberg, 37-12 and Johns Hopkins 27-13.

Also listed below are results from a pair of high school all-star meets, as Long Island area Nassau County battled Suffolk County in the first session, and a challenge between New Jersey and Long Island was featured in the third session. There was also the finals of another strong local high school tournament held during the day, as well as some youth wrestling competition.
