NEW YORK, N.Y. The finals have been established in women’s freestyle at the U.S. Non-Olympic Weights World Team Trials and at the Bill Farrell Memorial International, held at the New York Athletic Club on Thursday.
FINALS SCHEDULE CHANGE: The finals for women’s freestyle today has been moved up earlier, and will be held at 5:00 p.m. Eastern time.
In the U.S. Non-Olympic Weights World Team Trials, the finals matchup at 55 kg/121 lbs. will feature three-time World Team member Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) against Sarah Hildebrandt (Colorado Springs, Colo. /NYAC/OTC)
In the semifinals, Hildebrandt, who was seeded fourth, beat the top seed, 2012 Olympian and 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials champion Kelsey Campbell (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids), 2-0. Conder, seeded No. 2, defeated Michaela Hutchison (Lebanon, Ill./Titan Mercury WC), 5-0 in her semifinal.
At 60 kg/132 lbs., the top two seeds advanced, with three-time World Team member and 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials runner-up Alli Ragan (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) battling Mallory Velte (Sacramento, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) for the title.
Top seeded Ragan controlled two-time Junior World bronze medalist Kayla Miracle (Campbellsville, Ky./Sunkist Kids), 8-0 in the semifinals. Second-seeded Velte won a competitive 9-6 bout against No. 6 seed Jennifer Page (Colorado Springs, Colo./Titan Mercury WC), 9-6.
They will compete in a best-of-three championship series, with the winner earning the World Team berth.
The winners in these two weight classes will compete for the United States at the Non-Olympic Weight World Championships in Budapest, Hungary on December 10-11.
In the wrestle-back rounds at 60 kg/132 lbs., 2015 World bronze medalist Leigh Jaynes-Provisor took off her shoes in retirement, and handed them to her daughter Evelyn to the applause of the crowd. Jaynes-Provisor entered as the No. 3 seed, and lost her opening match to Page, 10-0. She was knocked out of medal contention with a 9-4 loss to Areana Villeascusa, who has been her teammate with the U.S. Army.
In addition, the gold medal and bronze-medal bouts have also been established for the Bill Farrell Memorial International, which includes action in the six Olympic weights. For the Bill Farrell event, the finals will be one match.
Five U.S. wrestlers have reached the finals, with a chance to win the gold medal. Three-time World champion Adeline Gray (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) battles Norway’s Signe Fidge Store in their round robin final match. Both Gray and Store have 1-1 records.
There will be an all-USA final at 58 kg/128 lbs., as 2015 Junior World bronze medalist Becka Leathers (Choctaw, Okla./Titan Mercury WC) will face Lauren Louive (Iowa City, Iowa/Hawkeye WC).
