VASTERAS, Sweden – Britton Holmes won a gold medal at 69 kg/152 lbs. in the Cadet division, the top U.S. performance in the Malar Cup, a Greco-Roman tournament held Friday and Saturday.

Holmes was one of five USA medalists. Team USA won three silver medals on the Senior level, and added Holmes’ gold and a bronze medal on the Cadet levels.

The USA entered 23 athletes in the competition on Saturday, and advanced 15 athletes into Sunday’s action. This tournament is being run by the old vertical pairing system, which is a double elimination system with either one pool or two pools.

Competing at 69 kg/152 lbs., Holmes won an impressive seven matches over the course of the two days, with pin and three technical falls. In the gold-medal finals, Holmes scored an 8-0 technical fall over Waltteri Latvala of the Vaasan Voima-Veikot club.

Holmes needed four wins on Sunday to reach the top of the podium. Holmes is from Peyton, Colo.

Three USA athletes won Senior-level silver medals, Austin Morrow at 66 kg/145.5 lbs., Logan Kass at 71 kg/156 lbs. and G’Angelo Hancock at 98 kg/215 lbs.

Morrow reeled off five straight wins to reach the finals, all five by technical fall, outscoring his rivals by a combined 42-0. In the championships finals, he was edged by Havard Jorgensen of the Kolbotn Bryting club, 4-2.

Kass also went on a five-match winning streak to win his pool, showing dominance with two pins and three technical falls. In the championship finals, he fell to Simon Erlandsson of the BK Pan club, 11-0.

Morrow and Kass compete for the U.S. Olympic Training Site program at Northern Michigan University. Morrow is from Wenatchee, Wash. and Kass hails from New Prague, Minn.

Hancock used three dominant wins to reach the finals, scoring a pin and two technical falls. He was beaten in the championship match by Leon Kessidis of Huddinge BK, 13-4.

It was the second straight week that Hancock won a medal in an international event in Sweden, taking a gold medal last weekend at the Klippan Cup. Hancock, a U.S. Olympic Training Center resident athlete in Colorado Springs, Colo., won a Junior World bronze medal last year and was third in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.

Hunter Lewis scored a bronze medal at 50 kg/110 lbs. in the Cadet division. Lewis lost his first match on Saturday to eventual champion Niklas Ohlen of the Brannans IF club, 6-4. He then won four straight matches, including three pins and a technical fall. In his bronze-medal bout, he put away Tim Schied of Germany with a 9-0 technical fall. Lewis hails from Stoughton, Wis.

The United States had strong team finishes in both age groups.

In the Cadet division, the USA was tied in third place with the Norrtälje BK club with seven points, out of 68 team clubs entered. The Cadet champions were the Västerås BK with 12 points. In the Senior division, the USA finished in fourth place with nine points. Team Tallinn Open was the champion with 13 points.

The U.S. team was coached by USOEC head coach Rob Hermann and by Lucas Steldt.

“The tour was once again an invaluable experience for the US athletes. The double elimination competitions against foreign athletes guaranteed high quality competition. Some athletes had up to 12 plus matches against foreign wrestlers. They also had 8 training seasons with wrestlers from multiple countries. These tours are a major part of our developmental program,” said Steldt.

The next developmental tour is the Austria Junior Open in Gotzis, Austria, March 1-11, 2017. Anyone interested contact USOEC coach Rob Hermann at rhermann@nmu.edu.
