GUELPH, Canada – Five talented U.S. Senior wrestlers won gold medals at the Canada Cup on Saturday.
Included were women’s freestyle titles from Victoria Anthony (Huntington Beach, Calif./Sunkist Kids) at 48 kg/105.5 lbs., Jacarra Winchester (San Leandro, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 58 kg/128 lbs. and Mallory Velte (Sacramento, Calif./Titan Mercury WC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.
Winning a gold medal in men’s freestyle were Tyler Graff (New Brunswick, N.J./New York AC) at 57 kg/125.5 lbs. and Morgan Smith (Lynnwood, Wash./Simon Fraser) at 86 kg/189 lbs.
Anthony, a two-time Junior World champion and 2013 U.S. World Team member, was dominant in her wins with a pin and two technical falls. In the finals, she defeated talented Natasha Kramble of Canada in a 10-0 technical fall. Anthony was second in the 2016 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
Winchester, a WCWA college national champion and developing freestyle talent, also won three matches on the way to the gold. She opened up her offense in a 14-3 technical fall win in the finals over Emily Schaefer of Canada.
Velte, a WCWA college national champion for Simon Fraser Univ., won three times on the way to her gold. She beat veteran Canadian star Breanne Graham in the finals, 7-0. Velte was on the 2015 U.S. Junior World Team and is No. 3 on Women’s Team USA.
Graff, a past NCAA runner-up at Wisconsin, won all three of his bouts by technical fall, including a 10-0 whitewash of Dylan Bray of Canada in the championship finals.
Smith, who competes in college for Div. II Simon Fraser in Canada, had to win four times in a row for his title. He won his first three matches against Canadians, then stopped Switzerland’s Stefan Reichmuth in the championship finals, 8-6.
Among the U.S. women, winning silver medals were Randi Beltz (Chesterfield, Mo./Titan Mercury WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Julia Salata, Canton, Mich. (New York AC/OTC) at 69 kg/152 lbs. Both competed in round-robin brackets.
Beltz finished 1-1 in a three-athlete weight class, with a win over American Francesca Giorgio. Salata had an impressive 3-1 record, with a win over U.S. Olympic Team Trials champion Tamyra Mensah of the USA. Salata’s only loss came against past World champion Aline Focken of Germany.
Giorgio and Mensah won bronze medals in their weight classes.
A pair of U.S. men won bronze medals, Cruz Velasquez (Maple Valley, Wash./Simon Fraser) at 61 kg/132 lbs. and Enock Francois (Ithaca, N.Y./New York AC) at 97 kg/213 lbs. Velasquez finished 2-2 in his five-athlete roundrobin. Francois opened with a loss to World bronze medalist Javier Cortina of Cuba, but powered back with two wins in the wrestle-backs to claim his medal.
