Hovis, Steveson, Mealy, Hardy star at Western Junior Regionals in freestyle

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Competing in his third championship finals of the weekend, Quentin Hovis of Arizona won the 152-pound title and was named Outstanding Wrestler in freestyle at the Western Junior Regionals on Friday.
Hovis scored an impressive 14-4 technical fall in the finals over Iowa state champion Nelson Brands of the Eastern Iowa WC. A four-point takedown in the first period gave Hovis an 8-4 edge after the first period, then Hovis scored a takedown and a pair of turns to close out the technical fall.
Hovis was a UWW Junior Greco-Roman champion and also won a silver medal in Greco-Roman at the Western Junior Regionals on Thursday.
2015 Cadet World champion Gable Steveson of Minnesota Elite was dominant in winning the 220-pound weight class, capped off with an 11-0 technical fall over Wade French of Tactik 3-Style Wrestling in the finals.
Two athletes were dominant in winning double titles, taking both Greco-Roman gold on Thursday and freestyle gold on Friday, Jerry Mealy of the Cobra All-Stars of Oregon at 132 pounds and Brock Hardy of the Stinger WC of Utah at 138 pounds.
Mealy had a rematch of his Greco-Roman finals with Job Greenwood of GRIT Athletics WC of Colorado. Greenwood had a strong start, getting ahead 6-1 early in the second period. Mealy was able to score a takedown and a series of gut wrenches to secure an 18-6 technical fall. Mealy has now won Western Junior double titles for two straight years.
Hardy was dominaint in the freestyle finals, putting away Taylor Brown of MO West Championship Wrestling with a quick 10-0 technical fall. Hardy won a double title this year, and has won the Western Juniors in freestyle for two straight years.
Jesse Gomez of Tech Fall Wrestling scored a 10-0 technical fall in the 113-pound finals over Western Junior Regional Greco-Roman champion Edward Matthew Hruby of the Vacaville WC of California.
After winning a silver medal in Greco-Roman on Thursday, Kayne Hutchison of Pittsburg Wrestling of Kansas won the gold medal in freestyle at 285 pounds, scoring a 10-0 technical fall in the finals over Jason Bains of Coast Wrestling of Canada. Hutchison was effective with turns from the top to defeat Bains. In the semifinals, he avenged his loss in the Greco-Roman finals by defeating Brian Barnes of McMinnville HS of Oregon.
The finals featured a number of pins and technical falls.
Those winning with technical falls included Hovis, Steveson, Mealy, Hardy, Gomez, Hutchison, plus Gage Woods of Team Nevada (100) and RJ Bingham of the Mustang Wrestling Club (160).
Scoring pins in the finals were Cody Fettig of Newberg Mat Club (106), Jeremy Trinh of the Titan Mercury Wrestling Club (126) and Casey Randles of TDWC (182).
One of the most exciting finals was at 145 pounds, when Ethyn Ewing of California edged Gabriel Dinette of Mile High WC in a wide-open 13-11 match. The match was tied at 11-11 late, but Ewing scored the winning takedown late in the match.
