by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
Daniel Greg Kerkvliet (Inver Grove Heights, Minn./Nittany Lion WC) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on Sept. 22, 2020.
Kerkvliet, a 2017 Cadet World champion and 2018 Cadet World silver medalist, competed on Saturday as part of the Nittany Lion Wrestling Club’s dual against the Cliff Keen WC.
Taking on 2018 U23 World silver medalist and All-American for Maryland Youssif Hemida, Kerkvliet scored a win for NLWC with a first-period technical fall.
A redshirt freshman for Penn State, Kerkvliet rattled off four takedowns and added a turn for a 10-0 shutout over fellow World medalist.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Manager of Communications Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
