Josh Rodriguez selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
Josh Rodriguez (State College, Pa./Nittany Lion WC) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on July 9, 2019.
Rodriguez traveled to Madrid last weekend to compete in the Grand Prix of Spain, where he won gold.
A 2019 Pan American champion, Rodriguez added to his success this year, winning four matches en route to another gold medal.
He defeated Muhamad Ikromov of Tajikistan, 13-11, Ligret Sadiku of Canada, 7-2, and Viktor Lyzen of Germany, 11-0, to get to the finals.
In the gold-medal match, Rodriguez took out Lehr, who was fifth at the 2018 World Military Championships and third at the 2017 Junior European Championships, 6-2.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
