by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
Abigail Nette (Saint Rose, La./Emmanuel College) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on Jan. 22, 2019.
Nette, a 2018 U23 World Team member, cruised her way to the 130-pound title at the Tornado Open, a collegiate women’s tournament, in Bristol, Tenn., over the weekend.
In her three bouts on the day, Nette, ranked No. 1 at the weight, recorded three technical falls with the trio of wins coming over ranked wrestlers.
To open her tournament, the Emmanuel Lion scored a 10-0 victory over No. 7 Alyssa Aceval of King. In the semifinals, Nette defeated No. 4 at 123 pounds Cheyenne Sisenstein from King, 13-3.
To win the bracket, Nette took out 2017 WCWA champion and fifth-ranked Andribeth Rivera of Campbellsville with a dominating 16-6 performance.
Nette was one of four Tornado Open champions for Emmanuel.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
