Cohlton Schultz (Parker, Colo./U.S. Cadet World Team) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on September 6, 2017.
Schultz won a gold medal at 100 kg/220 lbs. in Greco-Roman at the 2017 Cadet World Championships in Athens, Greece on September 5.
Schultz became the first U.S. Cadet Greco-Roman champion in 20 years, with the last American to win a Cadet Greco-Roman gold in 1997.
Schultz scored a go-behind takedown with 15 seconds left to edge Balint Vatzi of Hungary in the gold medal finals, 3-1. Schultz was first on the board, drawing a passivity point to take a 1-0 lead into the break. With less than a minute left, Vatzi went up 1-1 on criteria with a step out, leading until Schultz’ dramatic takedown for the win.
Schultz had defeated Vatzi earlier this summer at the Croatia Open in the Cadet division.
To get to the finals, Schultz opened with pins against 2017 Cadet Pan American silver medalist Edson Salazar of Mexico and Kantemir Shibzukhov of Russia. In the semifinals, he edged 2017 Cadet Asian champion Seyedmojta Hosseini of Iran, 1-0.
This was the second straight year that Schultz has competed on the Cadet World Team, after placing 14th at the 2016 Cadet Worlds in Greco-Roman. He was also a member of the 2017 U.S. Junior World Greco-Roman team, placing 15th competing up a weight class at 130 kg in Finland in August.
Schultz became the first Cadet Greco finalist for the U.S. since 1998 and won U.S. Greco’s first Cadet World medal since 2013 when Cade Olivas and Jon Jay Chavez earned bronze.
A native of Parker, Colo., Schultz is a Colorado state champion for Ponderosa High School. He won the Colorado 5A state title at 220 pounds the last two years. Schultz also trains regularly at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
