Jacob Warner (Tolono, Illinois/University of Iowa) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on November 22, 2017.

The University of Iowa true freshman won his second college open tournament of the season, taking top prize at the Lindenwood Open, to push his season record to 8-0.

Warner won four bouts on the day in St. Charles, Mo., to capture the 197-pound title, beginning with a 5-2 win over Oklahoma’s Jake Woodley. He continued with a 19-4 technical fall over West Virginia’s Hunter DeLong and a 3-1 edging of Oklahoma’s Andrew Dixon to qualify for the finals. Warner was dynamic against two-time NCAA All-American Willie Miklus of Missouri, cruising to the gold medal by a 16-7 final.

Warner was a top prospect coming out of Washington Community High School as a three-time Illinois state champion. His top credential is a bronze-medal outing in men’s freestyle at the 2016 Cadet World championships held in Tbilisi, Georgia.

He earned six All-America finishes at the USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior Nationals held in Fargo, N.D., annually. Warner took first in both the Junior freestyle and Greco-Roman divisions in 2017. He did the same in 2015 at the Cadet level.

Warner finished in third place at this year’s UWW Junior World Team Trials, losing only to tournament champion and eventual Junior World bronze medalist Kollin Moore.

It is expected that Warner will redshirt this season for the Hawkeyes before competing for the starting position at 197 pounds in 2018.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the Senior level.

To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete’s name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Manager of Communications Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
