Max Wohlabaugh (Winter Springs, Fla./Florida Jets) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on May 30, 2017.
Wohlabaugh put on a striking performance at the USA Wrestling Southeast Regional in Atlanta, Ga. last weekend, claiming both the Greco-Roman and freestyle crowns at 170 pounds.
The Florida native won eight matches over the course of the two-day event with five victories coming by way of technical fall. In the Greco-Roman finals, Wohlabaugh defeated Raul Gierbolini of Florida, 7-0. He followed with a 10-0 win over Georgia’s Ian Darling in the freestyle finals.
Wohlabaugh has had tremendous success in the international styles in recent years. Last year, he represented the U.S. at the Cadet World Championships held in Tbilisi, Georgia. He also finished in second place at the USA Wrestling Junior Nationals in both styles last summer in Fargo, N.D., and was a Cadet Nationals champion in Greco-Roman in 2015.
On the folkstyle side, Wohlabaugh is a four-time place-winner at the Florida high school state championships and was a state champion in 2014. In addition, won the Cliff Keen/USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals last November.
Wohlabaugh will continue his career at the collegiate level next year for Clarion University and head coach Keith Ferraro.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the Senior level.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete’s name, wrestling program and weekly and career accomplishments to Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
