Anthony Cassioppi (Roscoe, Ill./Hononegah WC) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on June 27, 2017.
It has been a banner month for the Illinois native who has shown utter dominance in his outings at the Junior Pan American Championships in Lima, Peru, and the prestigious USA Wrestling Junior Nationals Duals in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Cassioppi wrestled seven total matches at the Junior Pan American Championships across both international styles. He secured the Greco-Roman gold at 120 kg/264 lbs. with three pins and one 9-0 technical fall, then followed it up with one pin and two 10-0 technical falls in the men’s freestyle tournament to double in gold. He also received the Pan American “Golden Boot” award as the most outstanding wrestler in the Greco-Roman division.
This past weekend, Cassioppi strung together 14 victories at the Junior Nationals Duals, seven in Greco-Roman and seven in men’s freestyle, to make the All-Tournament Team at 285 pounds in both styles. His undefeated streak in Tulsa helped Team Illinois to a championship in Greco-Roman and runner-up finish in men’s freestyle.
On top of his recent accomplishments, Cassioppi has posted stellar results in several USA Wrestling national events. He was runner-up at the UWW Junior Greco-Roman Trials last April. That same weekend he earned a semifinal berth and sixth-place finish at the UWW Junior Freestyle Nationals.
He has placed in the top three at the USA Wrestling Cadet and Junior Nationals held in Fargo, N.D. four times in the past two years, twice in Greco-Roman and twice in men’s freestyle. He finished in second place in the Junior Freestyle Nationals last summer.
Cassioppi capped off a spectacular folkstyle season that saw him win his first Illinois state championship with a gold medal at the USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals. At the Illinois state tournament, Cassioppi pinned all four of his opponents to claim the 3A 285-pound state title for Hononegah High School.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the Senior level.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete’s name, wrestling program and weekly and career accomplishments to Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
