SPC Endhyr Meza (Colorado Springs, Colo./U.S. Army WCAP) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on February 28, 2017.

Meza competed with tremendous vigor at the 2017 Armed Forces Championships held at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst over the weekend to win gold medals in both the Greco-Roman and freestyle divisions.

On the first day of competition, Meza competed in Greco-Roman at 98 kg/215 lbs. for the U.S. Army. He recorded technical fall victories over E-5 Antonio Harris of Navy, A1C Raul Velez of Air Force and 1st Lt Daniel Miller of Marines to help guide Army to the team title.

Meza followed up with a similar performance on day two, wrestling at 125 kg/275 lbs. in freestyle. He posted technical fall wins over E-5 Zachahria Manning of Navy, A1C James Shreve of Air Force and Sgt Trent Osnes of Marines to complete the undefeated tournament, again helping Army to a team championship.

Throughout the competition, Meza won his six bouts by a combined 60-5 score with all his wins ending by technical fall. He successfully defended his Armed Forces freestyle title from 2016.

On the international level, Meza primarily competes on the Greco-Roman side. He was an eighth-place finisher at the 2015 CISM Military World Games and a fourth-place finisher at the 2016 Dave Schultz Memorial International. Meza also owns two eight-place finishes at the U.S. Open in 2015 and 2016.

Originally from San Diego, Calif., Meza wrestled in college for one year at Cal-State Bakersfield before joining the Army in 2012.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.

To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete’s name, wrestling program and weekly and career accomplishments to Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
