Joey Davis (Compton, Calif./Notre Dame College) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on March 14, 2016.
Davis etched his name into wrestling lore this weekend by completing his journey to become the first NCAA Division II wrestler to win four national titles and go undefeated in the process.
Wrestling at 184 pounds for Notre Dame College, Davis capped off his landmark collegiate career with a 3-1 victory over Travis McKilop of Pittsburgh-Johnstown in the NCAA finals held at the Denny Sanford Premier Center in Sioux Falls, S.D. He was named outstanding wrestler of the NCAA Division II Wrestling Championships.
The win on Saturday finalized his career collegiate record to 131-0.
Across all three NCAA divisions only Cael Sanderson of Iowa State (159-0), Marcus LeVesseur of Augsburg (155-0) and now Davis have completed their collegiate careers as undefeated, four-time NCAA champions.
Davis, a native of Compton, Calif., was a two-time California high school state champion for Sante Fe High School prior to attending Notre Dame College.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
To nominate a wrestler for USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week please send the athlete’s name, wrestling program and weekly and career accomplishments to Richard Immel at rimmel@usawrestling.org.
