Bobby Telford (Hockessin, Del./University of Iowa) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Telford had a huge week for the top-ranked Hawkeyes, winning a Midlands Championships and earning a pair of dual-meet victories at 285 pounds.
Telford knocked off No. 1 Mike McMullan of Northwestern 4-2 in the Midlands finals on Dec. 30 in Evanston, Ill. That gave Iowa a record-setting team total as the Hawkeyes won their record 24th Midlands team title.
Telford, a two-time All-American, then downed No. 10 Nick Tavanello of Ohio State 4-0 to clinch Iowa’s 18-14 road win over the No. 5 Buckeyes on Sunday in Columbus.
Telford also earned a 6-2 win over No. 9 Billy Smith in Friday’s Big Ten dual win at Rutgers.
Telford is now ranked No. 2 nationally. He placed fifth at the 2012 NCAA tournament and fourth at the 2014 NCAAs.
