by Craig Sesker USA Wrestling
Alyssa Lampe (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Lampe rolled past fellow 2013 World Team member Victoria Anthony in the U.S. Open finals on April 19 in Las Vegas.
Lampe took charge early in scoring a 10-0 technical fall in the women’s freestyle finals at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. Lampe won her second straight Open title.
Lampe won a loaded 48 kilos weight class in Vegas that also included World champion and Olympic bronze medalist Clarissa Chun, who lost to Anthony in the semifinals.
By virtue of her win, Lampe has earned a spot in the best-of-3 championship series at the World Team Trials on May 31-June 1 at Madison, Wis.
Lampe captured World bronze medals for the U.S. in 2012 and 2013.
