Tyrell Fortune (Portland, Oregon/Grand Canyon WC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Fortune swept Tony Nelson in two straight matches to win a University Nationals freestyle title at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. at the University of Akron on Sunday in Akron, Ohio.
In a battle of 2013 NCAA champions, Fortune won the first match over Nelson 7-2 before pinning him just 22 seconds into the second bout.
Fortune won a 2013 NCAA Division II title for Grand Canyon while Nelson won the 2012 and 2013 NCAA Division I heavyweight titles for Minnesota. Nelson was fifth at the 2012 University World Championships.
Fortune was one of seven University Nationals champions who qualified to wrestle at August's World University Games in Kazan, Russia.
Fortune placed third in the U.S. Senior Open in freestyle this past month in Las Vegas.
Fortune was a two-time junior-college national champion for Clackamas Community College. He is a past U.S. Junior World Team member in freestyle and Greco-Roman wrestling.
