Adam Coon (Fowlerville, Mich./Team USA) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Aug. 23-29.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Coon won a gold medal for the U.S. at 100 kg/220 lbs. in freestyle wrestling at the FILA Cadet World Championships this past Wednesday in Szombathely, Hungary.
Coon pinned Geno Petriashvili of Georgia in the gold-medal finals. Coon trailed 4-0 in the first period, then took Petriashvili to his back with a bodylock to secure a first-period fall.
He opened the meet with victories over Phool Kawar Mandeep of India and Akbar Elubaiulu of Kazakhstan. In the semifinals, he scored a clutch victory over Mojtaba Moradi of Iran.
Coon also competed in the Greco-Roman division at the FILA Cadet Worlds, falling in his opening bout.
Coon captured FILA Cadet Nationals titles in freestyle and Greco-Roman this year. He was a Junior Nationals Greco-Roman champion and third in the Junior Nationals in freestyle. Coon also won a Pan American Cadet freestyle title this summer in Mexico.
FILA Cadets are athletes who are 15-17 years old. FILA hosted a Cadet World Championships for the first time since 1999.
Coon became the first U.S. Cadet World Champion since 1999, when Justin Lester won a men's freestyle gold medal and Mary Kelly won a women's freestyle gold medal.
Haley Augello of Illinois followed Coon's victory by winning a FILA Cadet World title in women's freestyle last week.
