Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Dlagnev, a 2008 University World champion, upset 2008 U.S. Olympian Steve Mocco in the finals of the New York Athletic Club International on Nov. 23 in New York City. Dlagnev beat Mocco 1-1, 0-2, 2-1 in the freestyle finals at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. Dlagnev was named Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.
Dlagnev won the first period, scoring the last point of the period in a 1-1 tie with a takedown. Mocco had two pushouts in the second period to even the match. Mocco scored first in the deciding third period, but Dlagnev scored the next point and added an insurance takedown when Mocco had to force the action.
A two-time NCAA Division II champion for the University of Nebraska at Kearney and a native of Texas, Dlagnev has been training at the University of Northern Iowa with Sean Stender.
Dlagnev placed third at the 2008 U.S. Nationals.
