Tervel Dlagnev (Arlington, Texas/University of Nebraska at Kearney) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for March 11-17.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level. The announcement will be made each week on Wednesday.
Dlagnev completed his remarkable career in impressive fashion, winning the 300th and final match of the 2008 NCAA Division II Championships to give his University of Nebraska at Kearney team the championship on March 15 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Dlagnev won his second straight national title at heavyweight after downing Central Oklahoma's Dustin Finn 4-1 in the finals. Dlagnev's win gave Nebraska-Kearney a 108.5 to 108 edge over second-place Minnesota State-Mankato for the title. It was Nebraska-Kearney's first national tournament title.
Dlagnev finished his career with a 71-match winning streak. He was a four-time All-American, placing second in the nation as a sophomore.
Dlagnev is one of the top freestyle heavyweights in the U.S. He placed fourth at the 2007 U.S. Nationals and won the Sunkist Kids International Open this past October.
