Four Olympians, nine 2021 World Team members reach Greco-Roman semifinals at World Team Trials Challenge Tournament

CORALVILLE, Iowa — The first session of the 2022 World Team Trials Challenge Tournament showcased on Saturday featured Greco-Roman wrestlers who are attempting to qualify for Final X New York or Final X Stillwater.
Past Olympians Ildar Hafizov (55 kg), Jesse Thielke (63 kg), Alejandro Sancho (67 kg), Ben Provisor (82 kg) advanced to the semifinals.
Hafizov pinned Phillip Moomey in 51 seconds in his quarterfinals match. Thielke also had a quarterfinal pin over Logan Savvy in 1:28. Sancho won by a 9-0 technical fall over We Rachel. Provisor had a bye this session.
Members of the 2021 World Team qualified for the semifinals also, including Max Nowry (55 kg), Dalton Roberts (60 kg), Sammy Jones (63 kg), Peyton Omania (67 kg), Patrick Smith (72 kg), Jesse Porter (77 kg), Provisor, Alan Vera (87 kg), and Cohlton Schultz (130 kg).
Other notable advancers were Dalton Duffield (55 kg), a 2018 U23 World Team member, plus Pan-American champions Jamel Johnson (72 kg) and RaVaughn Perkins (77 kg).
In a rematch of the 2022 U.S. Open 77 kg final, No. 4 Britton Holmes defeated No. 5 Alec Ortiz in the quarterfinals for the second time in a row.
The quarterfinals featured just two upsets, with No. 6 Aidan Nutter earning a decision against No. 3 Mason Carzino-Hartshorn (63 kg) and No. 5 Christian Dulaney winning in a decision over No. 4 Tyler Hannah (87 kg).
Nine of the 10 Greco-Roman semifinals will be held on Sunday morning. These are in weight classes where no athlete has already qualified for Final X. The winners of Sunday morning’s semifinals both advance to Final X.
The 97 kg semifinals will be held during the Saturday evening session at 4:30 p.m. CT. 2021 World bronze medalist G’Angelo Hancock has already advanced to Final X and did not have to compete here. The two semifinal winners will compete on Sunday night in a best-of-three series, with the winner advancing to Final X New York against Hancock.
