FORT WORTH, Texas – The 2022 U.S. U20 Women’s World Team was set during an exciting best-of-three finals round in the Amon G. Carter, Jr. Hall of the Will Rogers Memorial Center on Saturday morning.

California star Amit Elor of the Titan Mercury WC, a World champion on the U17 and U20 levels last summer, repeated as a U20 World Team member with a two-match sweep over New York’s Latifah McBryde of the Bulls WC. Elor had a pair of technical falls, 12-2 and 11-0, scoring takedowns and multiple turns in each match. In addition to winning two World titles last summer, Elor was also a 2019 U17 World bronze medalist. Elor was the only repeat champion in this year’s event.

Claiming the Outstanding Wrestler award was Arizona high school star Audrey Jimenez of the Sunkist Kids, who swept her 50 kg series against King University All-American Sage Mortimer of Team Tornado WC. Jimenez, a 2021 Cadet World bronze medalist, won the first match with an 11-0 technical fall, methodically getting takedowns and turns in a high-action bout. In the second match, Mortimer scored the first takedown and led 2-1 at the break, but Jimenez jumped ahead with a takedown and turn and finished with a 7-2 decision.

Eight of the 10 championship series were completed as two-match sweeps, with two weight classes needed a third and final bout.

2021 Cadet World champion Katie Gomez of California defeated Estrella Dorado Marin of Army WCAP in two straight dominant victories at 53 kg. Gomez led 8-0 then pinned Dorado Marin with a hip toss in the first bout in 2:56, then quickly scored a 10-0 technical fall in 1:01 in the second bout, with takedowns and multiple ankle laces.

2022 U.S. Senior Open champion Adriana Dorado Marin won her second major national event in eight days with a two-match sweep of North Central College All-American Amani Jones of the Cardinal WC at 55 kg. Dorado Marin opened up her offense in bout one with a 15-2 technical fall, then scored multiple takedowns in the second match for a 10-5 win.

Scoring a big win at 59 kg was Colorado high school star Savannah Cosme of the Sunkist Kids, who scored a two-match sweep over 2022 U.S. Open champion Nanea Estrella of the Titan Mercury WC. Estrella scored two takedowns to lead 4-0 at the break in the first match, but Cosme nailed a hip toss for a pin in 4:10. In bout two, Cosme was dominant in the second period, scoring all seven points in her 7-1 win. Cosme competed in the 2021 Cadet Worlds. She will attend Arizona State and wrestle for the Sunkist Kids RTC. Estrella, an NAIA runner-up for Menlo College, recently signed with Iowa.

New York star Sofia Macaluso, who is ranked No. 1 nationally in high school, defeated returning U20 World Team member and Colorado Mesa All-American Claire Dicugno in two straight matches. Macaluso displayed great counter offense in both matches, and won the key scrambles, claiming bout one 8-3, then closing it out with a 9-2 win.

With a dominant two-match sweep at 65 kg, Nevada native Reese Larramendy of Wyoming Seminary defeated Utah’s Elleni Johnson of Legends of Gold Las Vegas with a pair of 10-0 technical falls. Larramendy scored a variety of ways, including leg attacks, a body lock, crotch lift turn and an arm bar. She will attend the University of Iowa next year.

A second Army WCAP champion came at 76 kg, as Tristan Kelly won two straight 10-0 technical falls over Illinois high school star Rose Cassioppi of the Hononegah WC. Kelly was a takedown machine, scoring five takedowns in the deciding second bout. Both of her wins were finished in the first period. Kelly was on the 2018 U.S. Cadet World Team.

At 62 kg, Iowa Wesleyan’s NAIA champion Adaugo Nwachukwu of the Swamp Monsters WC rallied to defeat New Hampshire high school star and 2019 Cadet World bronze medalist Skylar Hattendorf in three bouts. In an amazing shoot-out where both wrestlers hit big throws, Hattendorf claimed the first match 16-11. Nwachukwu adjusted well in bout two, scoring an 11-0 technical fall over Hattendorf. She came out with power and energy in the third match, shutting out Hattendorf again and finishing off her shots for a 10-0 technical fall.

Oregon high school star Destiny Rodriguez of All-Phase WC won the first match, lost in the second, then rallied in the third to stop North Central College All-American Tiera Jimerson of the Cardinal WC at 68 kg. Rodriguez opened with a controlled 9-3 win over Jimerson, scoring first and building a big early lead. In the second match, California native Jimerson repeatedly got behind Rodriguez to score takedowns on the way to a 9-3 win. In the deciding third match, both athletes got their offense untracked. Rodriguez jumped to a 9-4 lead, but Jimerson battled back, as the athletes traded scoring moves. Rodriguez scored when she had to and emerged with a 15-11 victory. Rodriguez won a U15 World title in 2019.

The winners of the championship series qualified to compete for Team USA at the U20 World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, August 15-21. The United States is the returning U20 World Team champions in women’s freestyle.
