On Friday, four U.S. women’s freestylers started the Pan Am Championships with three finalists and four medals. Today, the second flight pitched in four finalists and locked up the team title.

Sarah Hildebrandt, Dom Parrish, and Dymond Guilford all claimed Gold in Acapulco, Mexico, with Kayla Miracle reaching the finals before forfeiting.

A total of five golds and two silvers were enough to outpace second place Canada by 25 points.

Coming off a banner year in which she won Silver at Worlds and Bronze at the Olympics, Sarah Hildebrandt (50kg) led Team USA out of the gate winning her sixth Pan Am title by outscoring her opponents 30-0. Hildebrandt got the Golden Boot as the Outstanding Wrestler among the women.

Dominique Parrish (53kg) won a title in her first Pan Am appearance at any age level. She came back from deficits in both her quarterfinal and semifinal bouts. In the finals she pancaked Luisa Valverde (ECU), the 2020 Pan Am Champ, for the fall. Valverde was fifth at Worlds last year. Parrish’s semifinal win came over Samantha Stewart who was World bronze.

At 57kg, Cam Guerin went 2-2 with one loss coming to last year’s SR Pan Am Champ Yaynelis Sanz (CUB) and the other to last year’s Junior Pan Am Champ, Giullia Rodrigues (BRA).

Reigning World Silver medalist Kayla Miracle defaulted in the finals at 62kg. She was slated to face Canada’s U23 World Champ, Ana Godinez. Miracle was the defending Pan Am Champ at the weight. This Silver is her fourth career Senior Pan Am medal.

Closing things out for the U.S. Women was Dymond Guilford (76kg) who was appearing in her first Senior Pan Am tournament after taking Silver in the Junior division in ‘19. She outlasted Genesis Reasco (ECU) 1-1 in a bout where both points were activity clock violations. In the quarterfinals, Reasco beat 2019 World Champion Justina DiStasio (CAN), 10-4.

Over two days of competition, the United States won the team title with 190 points, with Canada in second with 165 points and host Mexico in third with 120 points.

The start of men’s action began Saturday as well with two weight classes which were both won by the Stars & Stripes. At 79kg nine-time World and Olympic medalist Jordan Burroughs surrendered just a single point in his four bouts to capture his fifth Pan American Championships title. Burroughs had clinched the title in the morning session.

The 92kg title will be brought home by J’den Cox, who has five career Senior level medals, including two World titles. In round robin play, Cox outscored his three opponents 31-0.

Team USA closes out the 2022 Pan Am Championships tomorrow with eight men’s freestyle weights. Their draws are outlined here.
