Strong field for USMC USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals, plus Recruiting Showcase, set for Cedar Falls, Iowa this weekend
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
The premier event of USA Wrestling’s national folkstyle season, the U.S. Marine Corps USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals, returns to the UNI Dome at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa, April 1-3.
The annual national folkstyle championships at the 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U, Junior and Masters divisions caps off another successful USA Wrestling season, which included the Folkstyle Tour of America events, in addition to competitions at the state and local level.
Added to the weekend is the National High School Recruiting Showcase, an elite event in which only state and National Prep champions and placewinners can enter, as well as athletes who earned their spot through one of five Qualifiers. This is the second year of this popular competition. For high school athletes who have not qualified for the Showcase, there is a new High School Open division at the tournament.
For all divisions except Masters, this is the first leg of the coveted USA Wrestling Triple Crown series, which is given annual to athletes who win USA Wrestling folkstyle, Greco-Roman and freestyle national titles at their age level in the same year. In 2021, there were eight Triple Crown winners, four at the 14U level, two at the 10U level and two at the 16U level. At the Junior level, the National High School Showcase is the event which serves as the first leg of the Junior Triple Crown.
Seven of the eight 2021 Triple Crown winners are entered to compete in Cedar Falls this year:
• Caleb Noble of Wisconsin (14U, 71) – This year at 88 lbs. in 16U
• Domenic Munaretto of Illinois (14U, 83) – This year at 94 lbs. in 16U
