Tony Dungy meets with HBCU Wrestling representatives Jones and McCoy in Colorado Springs

Last Thursday, legendary NFL and Super Bowl champion coach Tony Dungy visited the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Training Center in Colorado Springs to meet with HBCU Wrestling Executive Director Jahi Jones and HBCUW board member Kerry McCoy to discuss the future of Division I wrestling programs for men and women at Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
The trio met over lunch with a presentation by Jones. They were joined by NFL commentator James Brown over Zoom. Shortly after, they went on a tour of the Training Center complex, meeting several key players in USA Wrestling’s success, including athletic trainers, dieticians and strength and conditioning coaches. The tour wrapped up with a quick meet-and-greet and photo with USA Wrestling staff members.
HBCU Wrestling is dedicated to restoring HBCU DI wrestling programs. In the short time since its inception in 2020, the organization has been wildly successful, securing millions of dollars in funding and playing a crucial role in reinstating Morgan State’s wrestling program, which was the last HBCU to have a wrestling program, which was dropped in 1997. When it begins competition in 2023-24, Morgan State will be the only HBCU to offer a Division I wrestling opportunity.
