California wins 16U National Duals Greco-Roman championship over Pennsylvania Blue, 37-37, by criteria

LOVES PARK, Ill. — A flurry of cartwheels and celebratory screaming signified the result.
California claimed a national championship.
In a back-and-forth championship dual, California heavyweight Adam Farha clinched the 37-37 criteria win over Pennsylvania Blue to win the 16U National Duals in Greco-Roman.
Farha controlled Pennsylvania Blue’s Ean Winchester, 6-3 but the dual’s fate depended on the the scorebooks.
California won more bouts than PA Blue, (9-8). Therefore, California claimed criteria and a championship. Celebration ensued.
California started the scoring at 88 pounds with Gavin Pongsai. He clipped Alexander Diaz of PA Blue 13-12. Pennsylvania Blue responded with a second period fall at 94 pounds. A throw from California’s Dominic Bozanic backfired and Kole Davidheiser planted his feet and controlled Bozanic in a headlock for the fall.
A back-and-forth pattern emerged as California’s Slater Hicks teched Thunder Sollenbeger 10-2 at 100 pounds.
Two Fargo All-Americans battled at 106 pounds. Pennsylvania Blue’s Aaron Seidel conquered a scoreless first period to win 10-7 over California’s Devin Bobzien. Late in the first period, Bobzien caught Seidel in a cement mixer to take a 2-0 lead on back exposure. With less than 30 seconds left in the bout, Seidel scored six straight points to lead 9-7. A failed California challenge awarded Seidel’s 10th point.
California snatched the next four bouts with three decisions and a technical fall.
But Pennsylvania Blue, similar to its final pool bout, charged from behind. Vince Bouzakis and Bode Marlow cut into the deficit with technical falls for Pennsylvania. At 152 pounds, Owen McMullen fended off late attacks from California’s David Uyemara to win 5-4. McMullen flexed his singlet to display the Pennsylvania name and slapped his heart. His win gave Pennsylvania Blue a one-point lead.
That lasted a match.
California’s Angelo Posada crushed Tommy Cohenour to begin a string of three consecutive tech falls. Pennsylvania reclaimed the lead with technical falls from Magnus Lloyd (170 pounds) and Jason Singer (195 pounds). The two outscored their California opponents, 14-2.
California still lingered. An injury earlier in the tournament resulted in a Pennsylvania Blue forfeit at 220 pounds.
The result ultimately depended on the heavyweights. Ean Winchester of Pennsylvania Blue stepped onto the mat in a familiar position. On Thursday morning, Winchester encountered the same scenario. Win and his team advances to the final.
But Winchester didn’t repeat.
Farha pressured with a 6-0 lead at the break. In the second period, Winchester body locked Farha into two and gained a passivity point, but it wasn’t enough.
In the Gold/Silver Pool third place match, Minnesota Blue used a dozen bonus point victories to dismantle Oklahoma 55-20.
Iowa rebounded from two morning losses to claim fifth over Illinois 44-31. Colorado ended with a 41-32 win over Tennessee and claimed seventh place.
Another 16U National Duals championship remains. The tournament resumes Friday at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. MT. Freestyle action begins with the first three rounds. Color pools will be decided in the afternoon.
