TUNIS, Tunisia – Avenging her loss at Final X Stillwater, Yelena Makoyed upset 2022 World Team member Dymond Guilford in the 76 kg gold medal match at the Zouhaier Sghaier ranking series event.
Guilford defeated Makoyed in two straight matches in their best-of-three series in Stillwater, 10-5 and 12-2. The two met again this morning in pool competition where Makoyed lost 7-6 after recovering from a 7-0 deficit.
Makoyed brought her late-match momentum to the gold medal round. She was first on the board with a pushout and scored late on a takedown to win 5-2.
Makoyed continues to find success on the international stage. In June, she beat World silver medalist and Olympian Epp Mae of Estonia to win the Matteo Pellicone ranking series event.
Helen Maroulis finished fourth after forfeiting out of the bronze medal match. Team USA collected three medals today – golds from Makoyed and Mensah Stock and a silver from Guilford.
The action continues tomorrow in the following weight classes and disciplines:
WFS 50, 53, 55, 59, 65, 72; MFS 97, 125 kg.
