No. 3 Simon Fraser, with six champs, wins NCWWC Northwest Regional, ahead of strong No. 4 North Central team

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Led by six individual champions and 11 national qualifiers, No. 3 Simon Fraser won the team title at the NCWWC Northwest Regionals held at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point on Sunday.
The top five place winners in each weight class qualified to compete at the NCWWC National Championships held at Adrian College on March 4-5. This event is for varsity women’s programs from the NCAA.
Individual champions for Simon Fraser were Maddie Mackenzie (101), Karla Godinez-Gonzalez (116), Alexandra Hedrick (123), Lauren Mason (130), Alyvia Fiske (155) and Katja Osteen (191). All are first-time Northwest Regional champions because Simon Fraser did not compete in 2021 due to the pandemic. SFU also had two runners-up. Godinez Gonzalez and Hedrick were 2020 NCWWC national champions.
Simon Fraser finished 184 points, ahead of North Central with 156.5 points. No. 5 Augsburg was third with 117.5 points, with No. 12 UW-Stevens Point in fourth with 61.5 points. There were 10 teams in this year’s Regional.
North Central was led by individual champions Riley Aamold (143) and Yelena Makoyed (170), plus six runners-up. Makoyed, a returning national champion, won her second straight Northwest Regional title. North Central showed great depth, qualifying all 15 of their athletes for the national tournament.
Augsburg also had two individual champions, Emily Shilson (109) and Blanche ‘Nina’ Kemu Makem (136). Shilson is also a repeat Regional champion and a returning national champion. Augsburg qualified 12 wrestlers for the national championships.
Host UW-Stevens Point qualified six athletes for the national tournament. Pacific University qualified two athletes for the nationals, with Trine and Carthage getting one national qualifier.
