SOUTH POINT ARENA, Nev.–The Senior Greco-Roman tournament started this morning at the U.S. Open, advancing through the quarterfinal round. There were 40 battle-hungry wrestlers fought to earn their spot in tonight's semifinal bouts.

At 60 kg, Black Fox Wrestling Academy’s Max Black, who won the UWW U20 National tournament on Wednesday evening here in Las Vegas, won his quarterfinal and was scheduled to face two-time World Team member Dalton Roberts. Instead, Black will be heading straight to the finals, after Roberts pulled out with an injury default after his first match.

Roberts nearly had a technical fall, which turned into a close match in the quarterfinals. With 8-0 on the scoreboard, Robert’s opponent, Phillip Moomey (Spartan Combat RTC / TMWC), threw in the challenge block and won, which reset the score to 6-1. The Junior Pan-American bronze medalist turned up the heat and scored 11 more points on Roberts, including a four-point throw that Roberts rolled through, making the score 12-11. Adding another two points, Roberts held on to win his quarterfinals match, 13-12.

Past Olympians advancing to the semifinals included Ildar Hafizov of the U.S. Army (60 kg), Jesse Thielke of the U.S. Army (63 kg), Alejandro Sancho of the U.S. Army (67 kg) and Ben Provisor of the New York AC (82 kg). Provisor is a two-time Olympian.

Past World Team members in the semifinals include Hafizov, Thielke, Provisor, plus Max Nowry of the U.S. Army (55 kg), Kamal Bey of the U.S. Army (77 kg), Alan Vera of New York AC (87 kg) and Cohlton Schultz of the Sunkist Kids (130 kg).

Returning U.S. Open champions who qualified for the semifinals include Nowry, Alec Ortiz of the Minnesota Storm (77 kg), and Spencer Woods of the U.S. Army (82 kg). The semifinals also includes another past U.S. Open champion, Benji Peak of the Sunkist Kids (72 kg).

Competing for the first time in eight years was two-time World Team member Joe Betterman of Betterman Elite Wrestling, who was defeated in the 72 kg quarterfinals by Eddie Smith of the Pickaxe WC, 2-1. Another past World Team member Jacob Fisher of Curby 3 Style WC was defeated in the quarterfinals, falling to Ryan Epps of the Minnesota Storm at 82 kg, 11-7.

The top seven placers at each weight qualify themselves for the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in Coralville, Iowa in May. Qualifying procedures can be found on TheMat.com.

The semifinals’ first whistle will blow at 4 p.m. tonight. Brackets can be followed on FloArena and the matches can be streamed on FloWrestling
