LAS VEGAS, Nev. – The nation’s top high school girl wrestlers came out in force for the Girls National High School Recruiting Showcase, which began on Thursday. The championship finals were set after an intense semifinal round which included great action and a few upsets.
This event featured nearly 100 state champions and over 70 ranked wrestlers from across the nation.
Returning Showcase champion and No. 1 ranked Shelby Moore of White River Hornets WC of Washington powered into the 127-pound finals with a pin over Morgan Edwards of Blairstown WC in 1:53. Moore will battle an unranked opponent in the finals, Oregon’s Estella Gutches, who beat a number of ranked athletes on her journey to the finals.
One of the semifinals at 106 pounds featured a pair of Cadet World medalists, as No. 1 Audrey Jimenez defeated No. 4 Ava Ward of the Sunkist Kids, 8-0. Ward recently moved up to this weight class after being No. 1 in the nation last year at 100 pounds. Jimenez was able to score key takedowns in both periods to advance to the finals, where she will face No. 2 ranked Anaya Falcon of Walnut High School in California.
A pair of No. 2 ranked stars are also in the finals, Oregon’s Destiny Rodriguez of the All-Phase WC at 152 pounds and Washington’s Alivia White at 180 pounds. Rodriguez will battle No. 5 ranked Piper Fowler of Higher Calling WC, while White has drawn No. x Henlee Haynes of Florida for the gold medal.
There are four returning National Showcase champions who reached the finals, Moore plus South Carolina’s Zao Estrada of ET Wrestling at 122 pounds, Missouri’s Maddie Kubicki of Victory Wrestling at 144 and Missouri’s Haley Ward of MO West at 164 pounds.
No. 5 Estrada will battle unranked Carissa Qureshi of California for the title. Kubicki has drawn Oregon’s Isabella Amaro of Empire WC. Ward will face Amarisa Manuel of Michigan Revolution for the title.
Unranked finalists include Gutches, Qureshi, Karina Vang of Red Wave Wrestling of California (100) and Colorado’s Perseus Gomez of Pomona Elite (117).
There are two weight classes with round robins which will also be completed on Friday, 200 pounds and 225 pounds. The Showcase consolation rounds begin on Friday at 10:00 a.m, PT. while the finals will be held on the raised mat alongside the Senior Women’s finals at 4:00 p.m. PT.
