CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - In only its second year of existence, the Boys National High School Recruiting Showcase is filled with State Champions, returning National Showcase All-Americans, 2021 Junior Folkstyle champions, and even a 2021 Triple Crown Winner. It has truly become one of the top high school folkstyle events of the annual season.

After day one in the UNI Dome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa, 28 wrestlers have secured their place in tomorrow afternoon’s championship matches.

Of the 10 returning Showcase All-Americans from 2021, six repeated their accomplishment from a year ago. Four of these wrestlers remained undefeated on day one, punching their ticket to the title bout tomorrow afternoon.

These athletes are now two-time National Showcase All-Americans :
• Keyan Hernandez of Team Champs Wrestling Club has improved on his fifth place finish in 2021 and finds himself in tomorrow’s championship at 113 pounds
• Phoenix Blakely of Illinois placed seventh at last year’s Showcase. Blakely will compete for the championship at 132 tomorrow.
• Daniel Magayna of Iowa is in the finals of 160 after placing fifth at the same weight last year.
• Aoeden Sinclair of Wisconsin will wrestle for the 182 pound title tomorrow. He was at third at the Showcase last year.
• Markel Baker of Illinois is now a two time Showcase All-American, as he is still alive in the consolation bracket at 126 pounds. He was second at 120 last year.
• Cash Stewart of Wisconsin also earned his second Showcase All-American status after winning in the blood round this afternoon in the 160 pound bracket. In 2021, he earned fourth in the 138 pound bracket.

The event also included two 2021 Junior Folkstyle champions. Big Game Wrestling Club teammates Hunter Garvin (152) and Tate Naaktgeboren (182) each made the finals of the Showcase, pinning every opponent enroute to a perfect first day.

Five competitors are also former Cadet Folkstyle Champions. Four of the five earned All-American status today, with two of the wrestlers making the finals.

Mack Mauger of Team Idaho Wrestling Club won Cadet Folkstyle Nationals, as well as earning the Triple Crown in 2021. This year, he has reached the finals of the National Showcase at the 106-pound weight class, where he will face Dedrick Navarro, also of the Team Idaho Wrestling Club.

Sinclair was a past Cadet Folkstyle Champion as well. He earned a spot in the 182-pound championship bout tomorrow against Big Game’s Naaktgeboren, one of the most anticipated finals bouts.

At 195 pounds, 2021 Junior Nationals Greco-Roman champion Wyatt Voelker of the Big Game Wrestling Club has reached the finals, where he will battle Melvin Whitehead of Gold Rush Wrestling.

Last year, the event took place in Coralville, Iowa, and had both a boys and girls division. Instead the boys are sharing the UNI Dome with Senior level men and women participating in the Bill Farrell Memorial International over the course of the weekend, while the girls will compete in Las Vegas at the end of April.
