Finals and medal matches set in the boy's division of the USAW High School National Recruiting Showcase

The first day of action has drawn to a close at the 2021 USAW High School National Recruiting Showcase in Coralville Iowa, and all that remains in the boy’s division are the finals and the medal matches.

15U Greco-Roman and freestyle World champion Aden Valencia, the No. 1 seed, looked dominant in the 106 pound bracket, advancing to the finals with a pin, an 11-4 decision and a 14-1 major decision. Tomorrow, Valencia will square off with Isaac Hampton in the finals.

The 113 pound finals will feature two-time Alabama state champion Yanni Vines and Ethan Perryman, a 2020 California state fifth-place finisher. Perryman defeated two state champions in his first two matches before taking out 2020 California fourth-place finisher, Dominic Mendez, the No. 2 seed in the semifinals.

At 120 pounds, three-time Louisiana state champion Evan Frost will take on Markel Baker. Frost has been on a tear, earning bonus points in all his wins including a 12-2 major decision over No. 1 seed Nicholas Gonzalez in the quarterfinals and a 15-6 major decision over two-time Alabama state champion Isaiah Powe in the semifinals. Baker has also impressed, picking up victories over two state champions and a semifinal win over No. 7 at 106 pounds, Grigor Cholakyan.

Samuel Cartella and Dario Lemus will go head-to-head in the 126 pounds finals. Cartella defeated two state champions including three-time state champion Jacob Frost in the semifinals, 10-1. Lemus defeated No. 2 seed Jacob Macatangay and two state champions on his run to the finals.

Pierson Manville advanced through the top half of the 132 pound bracket, earning an 11-5 quarterfinal victory over Nevada state champ Luke Van Orden in the quarterfinals. On the other side of the bracket, Kole Brower put together a bonkers run, knocking off four state champions in four matches to make the finals.

At 138 pounds, Tagen Jamison also went four-for-four with all his wins coming over state champions, including a 6-4 sudden victory semifinal match against No. 1 seed James Latona. In the finals, he will face Brayden Ivy, who gutted out back-to-back sudden victory wins in the quarters and semifinals to punch his ticket to the finals.

Top seeded Tommy Curran took care of business at 145 pounds, advancing to the finals where he’ll see Daschle Lamer, an Oregon state champion. Lamer took out two state champs en route to the finals, including two-time Montana state champ Avery Allen in sudden victory, 4-2, in the semifinals.

Nationally ranked M.J. Gaitan dominated his way through the 152 pound bracket, picking up three pins and a 14-2 major decision. In the finals, he will square off with two-time Wisconsin state champion Mitchell Mesenbrink, who has been equally impressive, earning two pins, a technical fall and a 10-0 major decision.

Michael Caliendo, another nationally ranked wrestler, advanced to the 160 pound finals on the topside of the bracket. In the finals he will see Adam Thebeau, who has recorded three major decisions and a pin, knocking off two state champions along his way.

Lowell Arnold and Brayden Thompson will duke it out in the 170 pounds finals. Arnold took out two state champs on the top side of the bracket, while Thompson defeated No. 2 seed Beau Chacon, a two-time Nevada state champion, 5-0 in the quarterfinals.

National ranked Jared Simma, had a strong showing on the first day of the tournament, earning a pin, a technical fall, a major decision and a 9-2 decision to advance to the finals at 182 pounds. There, he will face Brook Byers, an Oregon state champion. Byers earned two victories over state champions including a 4-2 semifinal decision over Nevada state champ Caleb Uhlenhopp.

No. 5 seed Ethan Anderson and No. 2 seed Ryan Cody will wrestle in the 195 pound finals. Anderson bested No. 1 seed Joshua Negron in the semifinals, 8-3. Cody bulldozed through the lower half of the bracket, earning two pins and a, 15-5, major decision.

Dzhabrail Khurshidov, the No. 1 seed at 220 pounds, picked up two falls and an 11-3 major decision in the semifinals in his first day of action. On the other side of the bracket, Gunner Hoffman turned some heads, pinning the No. 3 and No. 2 seeds to make the finals.

Top seeded Apollo Gothard had no problems in his first two matches, earning back-to-back pins to put himself into the finals. He will face Jacob Johnson, who earned wins over the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds.

Tomorrow’s medal matches begin at 3:00 p.m. CST and will be streamed live on Trackwrestling.
