United World Wrestling released the seeds for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 wrestling competition on Twitter this week.
The top four seeds for the Olympic competition in each weight class was posted, based upon the results of a seeding system which featured the 2019 World Championships, continental championships and specific UWW Ranking Events. Four seeds will be separated in each weight class in Tokyo. All of those listed are from nations which have qualified to compete at the specific weight class.
A pair of U.S. women’s freestyle stars will get the No. 1 seed, five-time World champion and two-time Olympian Adeline Gray at 76 kg and 2019 World champion and Olympian Tamyra-Mensah-Stock.
Getting a No. 2 seed in men’s freestyle is 2016 Olympic champion and two-time World champion Kyle Snyder at 97 kg.
The United States has qualified to compete in 15 weight classes in Tokyo, the second-most in the world behind only Russia with 17. The other 12 U.S. Tokyo Olympians did not score enough points in the seeding series to reach the top four.
Note two foreign wrestlers who competed for the University of Michigan and grew up in the United States also received seeds in men’s freestyle: Serbia’s Stevan Micic, who is No. 1 at 57 kg and San Marino’s Myles Amine, who is No. 3 at 86 kg.
The seeds are based on the individual achievements of the athletes. However, it is the nation which receives the Olympic berth, meaning that the nation can enter any athlete they want at a qualified weight class. This means that these seeds could change, if a nation selects a different athlete to wrestle in Tokyo. The final list of entries has not yet been published, but is expected by early July.
The Olympic wrestling competition will be held August 1-7 in Makuhari Messe Hall.
