TULSA, Okla. - The first day of the 2021 Junior National Women’s Duals featured the pool competition, with California (Pool A), Texas Black (Pool B) and Illinois Junior Women (Pool C) winning their pools and advancing into Thursday’s Gold/Silver Pool.

With the cancellation of the Junior Women’s Duals in 2020 due to the pandemic, Illinois is the defending champion going back to 2019. There is a record 21 teams in this year’s Junior Women’s Duals, with 74 nationally ranked individuals on the team rosters.

Illinois Junior Women, which has nine nationally ranked wrestlers in its lineup, scored a 38-26 victory over Team Missouri in the Pool C finals. Illinois won the last six matches of the dual meet to secure the win, including two technical falls and two pins in the final streak. Winners by pin in the finals bout against Missouri were Alexis Ritchie (152), Rose Cassioppi (164), Maya Davis (117) and Taylin Long (127). Illinois also stopped Minnesota Storm 37-27 in the semifinals and Texas Blue 60-5 in the quarterfinals.

California was dominant in the Pool A finals, with a 52-12 win over Team Florida. California has eight nationally ranked athletes on its roster. California won the first 10 matches in the dual meet to put it away, including six pins, a technical fall and three decisions. Getting pins in less than a minute in the dual meet were America Lopez at 200 (56 seconds) and Solana Mottola at 127 (33 seconds). California stopped Texas White 60-6 in the semifinals and Team Missouri II 59-2 in the quarterfinals.

Texas Black, which has seven nationally ranked wrestlers on the team, stopped Pennsylvania Blue 37-25 to win Pool B. Texas Black won eight bonus point matches in the Pennsylvania Blue dual meet. Getting pins for Texas were Jasmine Robinson (152), Jessica Villanueva (164) and Hannah Francis (225). Texas Black beat the Oklahoma Outlaws 37-27 in the semifinals and Iowa 46-21 in the quarterfinals.

Illinois Junior Women, California and Texas Black advanced to the Gold/Silver Pool, which features the top six teams. Because this is a round-robin, the first round of the Gold/Silver Pool was held on Wednesday night.

Right off the bat, Pool C champion Illinois Junior Women defeated Pool B champion Texas Black, 35-28. In a back-and-forth dual meet, Texas Black took a slight lead with two big wins, when Avery Ashley upset No. 7 Shea Reisel 13-12 at 117, and No. 1 ranked Samara Chavez (competing up a weight) pinned No. 14 Maya Davis in 1:08 at 117 pounds. However, Illinois ran off three straight bonus point wins by ranked wrestlers to nail down the win, as No. 8 Taylin Long got a fall at 122, No. 3 Alexis Janiak scored a technical fall at 127 and No. 15 Natasha Markoutsis got a technical fall at 132.

The conclusion of the Junior National Women’s Duals will happen on Thursday, live on TrackWrestling.
