USA Wrestling has never enjoyed a better Summer Olympics than the 2020 Games that were held this past month in Tokyo, Japan, … and WIN Magazine was there to capture all the biggest moments to took place in Japan. Among the biggest moments was seeing Tamyra Mensah Stock, David Taylor and Gable Steveson win gold medals and become the faces of USA Wrestling.

USA Wrestling’s executive director Rich Bender, as well as national team coaches Bill Zadick and Terry Steiner, explain how their wrestlers did more than capture nine Olympic medals in Tokyo.

Even though fans had to work to find NBC’s Olympic Channel and stay up late to watch what was happening in Japan, they enjoyed live action and commentaries by John Smith and Jordan Burroughs.

The three gold medalists — David Taylor and Gable Steveson in men’s freestyle and Tamyra Mensah Stock in women’s freestyle — all shared the common ingredients in becoming USA’s latest Olympic champs.

USA Wrestling announced that the nine medalists from the 2020 Games will collect a record $950,000 from the “Living the Dream” fund that was set up a few years ago to benefit America’s Olympic and World medal winners.

Japan, the host country, celebrated in seeing its women freestylers win four of the six gold medals, but the American women showed they are ready to challenge the Eastern power by also collecting four medals in Tokyo.

Six other American wrestlers — silver medalists Adeline Gray and Kyle Snyder and bronze medalists Kyle Dake, Thomas Gilman, Sarah Hildebrandt and Helen Maroulis — helped USA earn its most medals since 1984.

Eight of the nine Olympic medalists accepted the offer to also represent their weight classes at the 2021 UWW Worlds this October, while the other 22 World spots will be decided at the World Team Trials in September.

All 20 matches contested by the five men’s freestyle wrestlers, which led to 16 wins, one gold, one silver, and three bronze medals, included many exciting moments and second-chance opportunities.

The six women who wrestled in Tokyo won 15 of 21 matches as Tamyra Mensah Stock won USA’s second all-time gold medal while veterans Adeline Gray and Helen Maroulis celebrated after dealing with past setbacks.

G’Angelo Hancock won the only match among the four Americans who competed in the upper-body style of wrestling while Ildar Hafizov, Alejandro Sancho and John Stefanowicz also represented Team USA in Greco.

The United States wasn’t able to take home a Greco medal from Tokyo. Both John Stefanowicz and Ildar Hafizov believe the Americans must do a better job with par-terre, which is so prevalent in today’s Greco.
