Michael Altomer (Stuyvesant, N.Y./ Curby 3-Style WC) has been named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on June 7, 2023.

One of the bright, up-and-coming Greco-Roman stars in the U.S., Altomer pulled off an impressive double gold performance at the U23 Nationals and U20 World Team Trials held at Spire Academy over the weekend. The New York native took first place at 82 kg in the U20 division and at 87 kg in the U23 division.

By way of winning the U20 Nationals held in Las Vegas last April, Altomer secured his place in the best-of-three championship series at the U20 World Team Trials. He posted two quick wins in the series against Brayden Gautreau of Northern Exposure WC, 8-0 and 9-0. Altomer wrestled a combined 87-seconds across the two matches. The victory secured his place on the U20 U.S. World Team that will compete at the U20 World Championships in Warsaw, Poland, this August.

Simultaneous to his U20 World Team Trials run, Altomer battled through a tough U23 Nationals field to grab a second national title on the day. Entering the tournament unseeded, Altomer teched his way to the best-of-three finals, where he faced Keenan Wyatt of Knights RTC. His U23 championship series was more competitive than the U20 counterpart, but the result of an Altomer win remained the same. He took the series two matches to none by scores of 9-4 and 5-4.

Altomer was a U20 Pan-American champion in 2022. He has also earned four All-American honors at the USA Wrestling 16U and Junior Nationals held in Fargo, N.D., most notably a Junior Greco-Roman title at 182 pounds last summer.
