Chance Marsteller (New Park, Pa., Titan Mercury WC) has been named USA Wrestling Wrestler of the Week on May 25, 2022.

Marsteller won the title at 79 kg at the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament at Xtream Arena in Coralville, Iowa, May 21-22.

With the victory in Coralville, he has earned the right to face Jordan Burroughs in Final X New York on June 8 at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, with the winner making the U.S. Senior World Team that will compete in Belgrade, Serbia, September 10-18. Final X New York also serves as this year’s Beat the Streets Annual Benefit event.

Marsteller entered the tournament as a No. 5 seed. He defeated two-time Penn State NCAA champion Carter Starocci of Nittany Lion WC/TMWC in the quarterfinals, 5-4. In the semifinals, Marsteller beat No. 1 seed and 2022 U.S. Open champion David McFadden of Pennsylvania RTC, 5-2.

Marsteller qualified for the best-of-three finals series against No. 2 seed Vincenzo Joseph of Titan Mercury WC/TMWC. In the first match, Marsteller scored a 4-0 victory in the first match. Joseph rallied in the second match, securing a 6-2 victory.

In the deciding third match, with each wrestler giving up a shot clock point (and Marsteller holding criteria), Marsteller scored on an ankle pick to lead 3-1. Marsteller was penalized with a fleeing caution to make it 3-2. With two seconds left, Marsteller hip tossed Joseph for four points and a 7-2 win.

Marsteller qualified for the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament by winning the 2022 Bill Farrell Memorial. H was second in the 2019 U.S. Open and is a three-time U.S. Open placewinner. He was an NCAA Div. I All-American for Lock Haven, and also competed for Oklahoma State in college. He was an undefeated four-time Pennsylvania state high school champion, and was a member of the 2012 Cadet World Team.

Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.
