Hunter Garvin selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week

Hunter Garvin of North Liberty, Iowa (Team Iowa) has been named the USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on June 15, 2022.


Competing at 152 pounds, Garvin was a member of the Iowa team in both freestyle and Greco-Roman at the Junior National Duals, held in Tulsa, Okla., June 15-18. Garvin went undefeated in both tournaments, and helped lead Iowa to the team title in both Greco-Roman and freestyle.


In Greco-Roman, Iowa scored a dramatic 34-31 victory in the finals to defeat Minnesota Gold in the finals dual. Garvin did his part by securing a technical fall win in the finals dual.


In Greco-Roman, Iowa was second in Pool A, dropping a bout to Oklahoma Red in the final. With a second place in the pool, Iowa advanced to the Gold/Silver pool, where it won all four of its matches to claim the title. Garvin went 8-0 in his Greco-Roman matches, including one pin, five technical falls, one decision and a win by disqualification.


In freestyle, Iowa won the title with a dominant 44-14 victory over Ohio in the finals. Garvin was one of five Iowa wrestlers who secured a technical fall in the dual meet.


In freestyle, Iowa won all three of its Pool A bouts to advance to the Gold/Silver Pool. Iowa won all four of its Gold/Silver Pool duals in dominant fashion, outscoring the opponents in team points by 196-61. Garvin went 8-0 in his freestyle matches, with seven technical falls and a forfeit.


Garvin was one of just seven wrestlers to earn a spot on the Junior National Duals All-Tournament Team in both freestyle and Greco-Roman.


Garvin is from North Liberty, Iowa, attended Iowa City West High School and competes for the Big Game Wrestling Club. He is ranked No. 4 nationally at 152 pounds by FloWrestling. Garvin has committed to compete for Stanford University.


Each week, USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level.
